Officials at the Gregg County Jail didn’t realize an inmate had been missing for three days until shortly before he was recaptured near Gladewater on Dec. 27, the Longview News-Journal reported.

Jace Martin Laws, 34, escaped from the facility on Dec. 23 and was recaptured after his father spotted him near his home on U.S. 271 west of Gladewater.

Gregg County Sheriff Maxey Cerliano told the newspaper that officials didn’t realize that Laws was missing until Thursday.

Laws had been sentenced on Oct. 23 to 70 years in prison for assaulting two Longview police officers, the News-Journal reported. He’s back in Gregg County Jail, this time on a $1 million bond on a charge of escape while in custody.

Cerliano said that as soon as the escape was discovered, jail officials reported it to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards. Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt, who is also chairman of the state jail commission, told the newspaper that the escape was reported in the required time frame.

Cerliano declined to release more information because he said an investigation into the escape is ongoing.
